Public Transportation

Baltimore has a well-developed public transit system that includes buses, a subway line, light rail and commuter trains. Because Johns Hopkins Medicine is a major employer in the Baltimore area, the Maryland Transit Administration provides numerous transportation options to the East Baltimore campus. Below are brief descriptions of four options available to get you to campus via public transportation.

  • Metro: The metro subway runs from Owings Mills Mall, through downtown Baltimore, and ends at the hospital below Broadway. This is a great option if you live in the Northwest suburbs of Baltimore.
  • Light Rail: The light rail runs from Hunt Valley, south to the BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport. One can take the light rail into the city and then connect to the JHMI-Homewood Shuttle at Penn Station.
  • MARC Train: The MARC train runs from Washington, D.C. to Baltimore. You can ride to Penn Station and then take the JHMI-Homewood Shuttle to campus.
  • Bus: The bus system has local lines that run to JHMI including routes from Canton, Fells Point and Patterson Park, as well as several express lines that run from commuter lots in the suburbs.

Fare information is available at the Maryland Transit Administration website. For safety tips on public transportation, please visit the JHMI Corporate Security website.

Lodging

We understand the challenges of accommodating family members who want to be with you during your stay at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Fortunately, our housing program can help. Here are some points to consider when deciding on the best housing options for your stay in Baltimore:

  • Your health insurance provider may cover local housing during your treatment. Check to see whether you have this type of coverage.
  • As a Johns Hopkins patient or family member, you have access to reduced rates at many local hotels. Contact Guest Services for more information or see our list of options for short-term housing.
  • Consider the special needs of any family members or caretakers who will need housing. If handicapped-accessibility is important, please clarify this when making arrangements.
  • Lower-cost housing often involves a waiting list, meaning reservations cannot be confirmed ahead of time. If you are on a waiting list, be sure to have a back-up plan, such as a local hotel reservation. When making hotel reservations, ask about cancellation policies.
  • Some properties cannot accommodate children, so be sure to inquire if your party includes a child. You may also consider specific housing options for pediatric patients.
  • Some accommodations do not have daily housekeeping services, restaurants, or concierge services, however, these options are typically less expensive than a hotel.
  • If you have hired a caregiver to assist you, a separate room may be required. Some facilities restrict the number of rooms one family can occupy. Be sure to clarify your needs with the individual property before your arrival.

Housing for Adult Cancer Patients and Families

The Hackerman-Patz Patient and Family Pavilion is a "home away from home" for adult cancer patients and their families. The Pavilion is across the street from the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Building on the main hospital campus. Comprised of 29 suites and 10 one-bedroom apartments, the Pavilion offers affordable short- and long-term housing for Kimmel Cancer Center patients and their caregivers, and can accommodate other Johns Hopkins patients when space allows. Outpatients must have a caregiver stay with them, and all guests must be 12 years or older.

Short-Term Housing

Some local hotels offer hotel rooms at a discounted rate - contact Guest Services to request a discounted reservation. The price for a one-night stay ranges from about $80-$160. You may want to view our list of nearby hotels before you call.

Your First Appointment

Getting Started

Step 1: Request Your Appointment(s)

Request an appointment using our secure online form and a member of our Medical Concierge team will contact you within one business day.

Step 2: Send Your Medical Records

  • Current diagnosis
  • Biopsy results
  • Your contact information

From there, your medical concierge will contact the relevant Johns Hopkins specialists and send your information to them for review.

Step 3: Receive Your Appointment Confirmation

Your concierge will confirm your appointment once the physician(s) have reviewed your records and have determined the best course of action. We'll send you a letter with the name of your doctor, the time, date and location of your appointment(s), and other important information you need to know before traveling.

If you also wish to make medical appointments for a travel companion, please let your concierge know so we can schedule them before finalizing your travel itinerary.

Step 4: Make Your Travel Arrangements

Your concierge will also make recommendations for your travel needs--including transportation, hotels and local dining and entertainment options for you and any accompanying family members.

If you have any special needs or requests, please let us know so we can tailor your medical visit to you.

Pre-Admission Coordination

To ease your admission to the hospital, we will begin your paperwork as soon as your doctor informs us of your admission date. A pre-admission coordinator will call you at home to verify basic information, such as the name of your employer, your home address and the type of insurance you carry.

Talk to Your Physician

Before your admission or appointment, remember to discuss your estimated length of stay and anticipated tests and services with your physician. It's good to be aware of all the details so that you can check to confirm that your insurance provider will cover all of the charges.

Talk to Your Insurer

Be sure to find out what services, tests and procedures your insurance provider will cover before your appointment or admission. Many insurance carriers have coverage limits on room charges and certain tests, services and procedures. If you aren't sure which services are covered, contact your insurance company's member services office before your visit.

Your Arrival

Please plan to arrive on time, or even a little early, so that you won't be rushed as you park and come into the hospital.  This will also allow us more time to process your insurance and billing information correctly.

For clinic and outpatient visits, please try to arrive 15 to 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment to allow for registration.

For inpatient procedures, please arrive by the specific time requested by our admitting staff or your physician's office.

What to Bring

To make your visit easier, remember to bring:

  • Johns Hopkins identification card, if you received one on a prior visit (some Johns Hopkins facilities issue a card with each visit)
  • Health insurance card
  • Picture identification, such as a driver's license
  • Referral and/or authorization forms, if required by your insurance company

Insurance

We accept the following insurance and contracted managed care plans at Johns Hopkins Hosiptal.

Further insurance information:

  • Please be advised that there may be certain services provided in our facility which are not covered by our contract with your plan. Please inquire with your health plan before calling to schedule an appointment.

  • Please be advised we are participating for Medicare, but we are not contracted with Medicare Advantage Plans.
  • We are participating for Maryland Medical Assistance but not for Out of State Medical Assistance Plans.
  • Certain plans may limit the geographic area in which you are able to receive care, even for routine services.  Your plan may refer to this as a "LIMITED NETWORK".
